Leg Straightening Surgery – Osteotomy

Leg deformities are a leading cause of imbalanced and improper loading of the knee joint. If left untreated over the years, such deformities can lead to arthritis of the knee joint. Straightening of the legs via a knee osteotomy is the recommended remedy.

The human knee joint is a complicated cooperation between muscles, tendons, cartilage and bone. As the largest joint in the body, the knee experiences the most use and therefore deteriorates over time. Usually, this deterioration will not present any problems. But leg deformities can accelerate this natural degeneration and can potentially lead to arthritis of the knee joint. With the help of a knee osteotomy early on, the risk of developing arthritis can be greatly reduced.

Leg Straightening Surgery: Treating

A knee osteotomy is a type of surgery where the bone is cut, re-angled and reattached via wires, screws or clamps. The gaps in the bone resulting from cutting and repositioning are then filled with an artificial bone substitute. Straightening of the legs ensures that the affected patient regains a natural gait and no longer experiences imbalanced loading on their knee. This type of surgery is intended to help reduce the chances of experiencing knee arthritis in the future, but if this cannot be prevented, a total knee replacement might be necessary.

Leg straightening

Based on the type of leg deformity and the stage of the disease, either a valgus (for bowlegs) or a varus (for knock-knees) osteotomy will be performed, either increasing or decreasing the angle of the bone as required. In addition, a variety of other bone corrections are possible: changing the length or curvature, shifting the bone and many others.
